JEWELRY CARE
How to care for and protect your jewelry
Delighted with your new jewelry!
We hope you love your jewelry and wear it often! Most of the jewelry we sell requires very little care — just wear and enjoy. Here are some quick and easy tips to take care of your jewelry to prevent tarnishing, scratches and dullness.
The Rule of Thumb
The best advice we can offer is to ensure the jewelry is the last thing you put on in the morning and the first thing you remove in the evening.
Cleaning your Jewelry
The safest way to clean your jewelry is to pour a small amount of mild liquid soap in lukewarm water and use a small, soft brush (ideally a toothbrush) to clean. If your jewelry is particularly dirty, leave it to soak for 10 minutes. Rinse with clean water and pat dry with a soft, clean cloth. For the Bronze pieces do not use a polishing cloth. Use a paper towel instead (wet or dry).
To Prevent Tarnishing
To prevent your jewelry from tarnishing, remove it when showering, swimming or when applying perfumes and lotions.
For sterling silver jewelry, polish it regularly with a silver polishing cloth. Silver polishing liquid and silver dips are not recommended as they may destroy the jewelry or any oxidized details on the jewelry if not rinsed correctly.
For plated jewelry, wipe gently with a soft, clean cloth. Do not polish the item too hard or it will wear away the plating. Don't expose it to silver polishing liquids or ultrasonic cleaning either. The plated finish will wear away over time. This is a natural "wear and tear" matter rather than a defect. You could have the item replated by a trusted jeweler if you want it shiny again.
For the Bronze pieces pour a tablespoon of baking soda into a small dish and squeeze some lemon juice over it. The pasty mixture will bubble then settle down. Use a small piece of cloth to rub the paste onto your piece. Leave the mixture on for about 5 minutes then wash off under running water, dry and buff with a clean soft cloth.
Protect your Jewelry
Jewelry may corrode if stored in moist or wet surroundings, especially when exposed to warmth and air. Perspiration can also cause corrosion. Its best not to wear your jewelry in the bath, while swimming, in the sauna or playing sports. Also, try not to expose the jewelry to make-up, creams, perfumes or hairspray as this may cause it to tarnish. Household chemicals such as bleach or ammonia will most likely cause damage as well.
For your stones, be careful with light and heat. Avoid leaving in sunlight as the color of the stone may change.
Storing your Jewelry
Protect your jewelry from tarnishing and scratches by storing it in the pouch provided or in a separate compartment in your jewelry box (silica gel packets or even a piece of chalk give added protection). If you don't have the above, a small zip lock bag is just as effective.
If you have problems with chain necklaces getting tangled, use a straw. Simply thread one end of the chain through the straw, close up the necklace, then pack your jewelry items as normal.
